28 May 2004

So I got my hair cut a couple of days ago, something that I have really grown to enjoy. When I was a kid I hated it, but now I look forward to going to the barbershop, there are some interesting guys there who cut hair and the conversation is usually pretty good. When I went in this week, the guy cutting my hair and I were talking about the upcoming memorial day holiday, what our plans were, etc. and how expensive gas prices are (don't get me started). He said he was going down to Myrtle for the weekend, and that he had just been down there a couple weeks ago. He said that this past week was "Black Bikers Week" at myrtle. I said it seems like they have some sort of bike week twice a month. He said that Harley week, or white bikers week (he laughed at his own joke here) was the week before that. I had to bite my tongue though when he started to tell me what the sad thing was. See, according to him, its a shame that they (black bikers) can't go down to myrtle without tearing stuff up. His friend closes his motel b/c the repairs from the last time he let 'them' stay there were more expensive than what he made from the week. Now to this guy's credit, that may have been true or at least what his buddy told him, and he did realize that its too bad that one or two people have to give the whole group a bad rep. (breaking TV's, driving the bikes into the rooms, causing ruckus at myrtle). But does he really want me to believe that the rednecks that came down for Harley week didn't cause any trouble? Drunk redneck bikers at myrtle... sounds like trouble to me already. Besides ruckus and commotion are what Myrtle Beach is all about. Whats really sad is that people have such a bad perception of black bikers week, and what's really a shame is that there can't just be bike week, or at least Harley week and sport bike week where people can enjoy being rowdy w/ their fellow bikers regardless of skin color.
