In case you were wondering why ESPN.com didn't cover the Walk-ons/PEN IZ mightier game tonight, their crew got caught up in a hurricane related delay.
Luckily, I can provide you with a first hand re-cap.
Not to ruin the suspense, but the final score was 18-0, the PEN IZ mightier beating SigEp.
During warmups, #1/2, Branson "waterboy' McRae turned an ankle practicing the center/qb exchange and running routes. The poor field conditions are believed to be the cause of this injury. McRae will be re-evaluated later this week, and the team hopes that he will be able to return by next week.
PEN IZ won the coin toss and elected to defer to the 2nd half. Sig(PIG)Ep took the ball from their own 15 and the swarming defense of PEN IZ forced them to punt after going 3 and out. on the ensuing drive, PEN IZ drove the field and connected on a touchdown to take the lead 6-0. Anders Larson kept the drive alive, picking up a first down with his legs. The offense then failed on their two point conversion. SigEp had better luck moving the ball on the ensuing drive, but eventually turned the ball over on downs. PEN IZ took the ball and drove, again scoring 6 on a TD throw by Deez (M. Vick) Larson. Again the 2 point conversion failed.
PEN IZ took posession of the ball to start the second half after SigEp failed to score before halftime. They again drove the field from their 15 and scored a touchdown, this time deciding to try for one. On the first attempt at conversion, the defense was called for roughing the passer. On the retry, Deez hit a releasing lineman (yours truley, Showtime) in the endzone for the conversion. The score however was called back on offsetting penalties of illegal forward pass and pass interference on the defense (they were clearly worried about the speed and threat of Showtime). the third try failed. The scoring was over at this point, with SigEp failing to convert another fourth down, and PEN IZ failing to convert on their own posession as some of the second team offense took the field. On the final posession of the game, SigEp failed to get the ball into the endzone, even after running a modified hook and ladder which was broken up by the defense.
The play of the day had to be a diving catch for a touchdown by Scott Marino after the defense tipped the ball. Marino came down with it between 3 defenders for the score.
Record: 1-0. Sacks allowed: 0. Points allowed: 0.
On a sad note, PEN IZ jerseys are under judicial review by commisionar tagleabeau. Apparently the greek letters that represent our team look similar to a word that may or may not be acceptable for jersey's. Don't blame us, blame the Greeks. and just remember, the PEN IZ mightier.
